Interactive Energy Map for NJ Counties

More and more each day the issue of global warming has arisen. The people have looked to find solutions to lessen the foreshadowing consequences of this problem: solar and wind power. These energy sources create electricity and energy without harming the environment. Thanks to gis4kids’ interactive Mappler utility, a teacher from a school used this to input the alternative energy sources used in each of the 21 New Jersey counties.

Building Lesson Plans (Working with Ramapo College)
The GIS4Kids program was started with volunteers from New Jersey and a number of other states throughout the country to promote the use of GIS in K-12 education. Despite enthusiastic efforts by our GIS4Kids volunteers to make GIS a continuous part of the core curriculum in schools, GIS projects often end up being one-time semester projects. The short-lived role of GIS in K-12 education was determined to be the result of limited funding for the GIS projects. While it is important to develop successful case projects utilizing GIS, our ultimate goals is to have GIS incorporated into the annual curricula for K-12 students.
Ridge High School in Bernards Township, NJ has utilized a customized Google Maps API for its environmental science course. The API was used to create a project in which students used GIS technology to track annual deer population in the area. The project has now become part of the core curriculum for this course.
Outreach to individual schools has proven to be an effective way to introduce or help schools utilize GIS. By working with the Master of Science Educational Technology program at Ramapo College in New Jersey, we are able to more effectively demonstrate to teachers the potential benefits of GIS for K-12 curriculum in a variety of subjects. In this presentation, we review how the GIS4Kids program has evolved from a single project to a curricular application for primary-school education.

This is a community interactive project open to any people who are interested in taking part of this project. This project’s sole goal is to have the community gather information about the interesting locations where people might go along the Delaware and Raritan Canal. You can become involved in this wonderful GIS experience by contributing to this project with your photography skills, researching skills, and other skills that will help this project grow. As you input the information on the places along the DNR canal, your contribution will make the visitors’ excursion to the canal more convenient.

My Favorite Places in West Windsor

Three students from West Windsor- Plainsboro High School North, Susan Im, Joanne Im, and I collaborated to make this project using the Mappler application. These students inputted data and pictures of the locations newcomers might go in West Windsor. These locations include schools/libraries, Parks and Recreation, Entertainment, Bookstores, Food Sites, and Historic Sites.

Useful GIS for Schools
ESRI is the one of the largest GIS software companies. They spents lots of resources to outreach K-12 communities. Many K-12 schools can get ESRI software with a significant education discount. While I agree ESRI’s software is really powerful, I often wonder whether it really fits into K-12 education. GIS is not still easy to be learned nor easy to be used. I believe GIS should be extremely easy to use for teachers and students. That’s why Google Maps and Google Earth become extremely popular for some teachers.

Sol Power

Sol Power has 5th-6th graders research and input schools that utilize photovoltaic systems in New Jersey. As they become involved in this project, the students become more knowledgeable of the interactive mapping system by using the map search functions and other tools as they use the Mappler application. Students have discovered an interesting fact from this Mappler project: Interestingly, there are 24 public k-12 schools that use solar power up to 4.3 megawatts (MW) or 4300 kilowatts (kW) in New Jersey.

A.P.E.A.K. at NJ Inventors

A.P.E.A.K. at NJ Inventors is an interactive mapping project focused on young students. This project has fifth graders from North Bergen, New Jersey to collect and input data of the inventions and inventors of New Jersey. As the students become involved in this project, they become more familiar with the Mappler application and the geographic location corresponding to the inventors and inventions.

Bernards Twp GIS Technology Science
This is my most favorite GIS4Kids project. Students at Bernards Township is collecting deer population data. It become part of science curriculum. http://www.communitymap.net/deer/bernards
Change the nature of instruction to a student centered, project based mode utilizing technology, resulting in the examination of the design of assessment”, Bernards Township has worked with Vertices to create interactive GIS websites for Science and Social Studies. These websites will allow students to collect, enter and analyze data that ties into the current curriculum and will be used to provide information to the township. The Deer Populations and Impact: Project Deer Spotter website will be used by science classes to monitor deer populations in the township and will result in the students making assessments on deer populations as they relate to accidents, hunting and food supply. The Bernards Township GIS Technology in Social Studies website is designed to give students a proper understanding of the impact of geography on a particular culture. Students will use the program to collect data about Bernards Township and make inferences and draw conclusions based on their information.
